Hard Bop Cafe is a swinging, straight-ahead set of ten tunes by the Larry Brown Quintet. The sound and style of the CD is in the classic "Hard Bop" tradition of the '50s and '60s, usually associated with vintage Blue Note label albums. This is pianist Larry Brown's working quintet which features PF on tenor, Kyle Funn on trumpet and flugelhorn, Kent Miller on bass, and Greg Holloway on drums. The recording includes tunes by Hank Mobley ("Funk In Deep Freeze"), Kenny Dorham ("Lotus Blossom"), Duke Pearson ("Big Bertha"), Tom Harrell ("Sail Away"), and Ralph Moore ("Hopscotch"), in addition to the jazz standards "My Foolish Heart," "It's You or No One," and "Old Folks." Also featured are local composer Alan Sherwin's take on Cole Porter "What Is This," and the Larry Brown original "Waltz For Katie Divine." In 2006 Hard Bop Cafe received a Wammie (Washington Area Music Association) award for Best Jazz Recording and the quintet was named Best Jazz Group. This CD was released in 2006 on Lush Life Records and is packaged in a standard jewel case with a four-page booklet. Total run-time is 58 minutes.
