INKWELLS & DESK ACCESSORIES

We have a nice selection of distinctive antique inkwells and inkstands, with most dating from the early 19th century to the early 20th century. These are in a variety of materials – glass with silver, silver plate or brass mounts - plus some in pewter and others in tortoiseshell with silver mounts. We have decorative inkstands – most with a pair of inkwells – and some in silver or silver plate with a taper holder with snuffer, sander and a place for dip pens. Any of these would make a nice addition to a desk in a study at home or in a business office.

We also have an assortment of ‘traveling’ inkwells in both simple designs and novelty forms. Most of these date from the late 19th century to the early 20th century. These were made to close securely so they could be carried and not leak. We have some that came as sets with a traveling inkwell and a match safe. Novelty designs include hats, umbrellas, hat boxes, teapots, globes, etc. The novelty inkwells are getting harder to find, but we have some good contacts who help source these for us.

Desk accessories include dip pens in silver or mother-of-pearl, propelling pencils in silver or silver gilt, and decorative desk seals for use with sealing wax. The desk seals have handles of various materials such as ivory, silver, hardstone, or turned wood. Many of the seals have a monogram, crest or coat-of-arms.

We also have stands or racks to hold and display several dip pens, letter clips to hold notes, letter openers, page turners, and letter racks. Any of these can add a distinctive small detail to a desk.

In this category we’ve also included various miscellaneous antique items that might add a unique touch to a desk or bookcase. We have antique architectural and surveying tools, drafting sets, telescopes, pocket barometers, etc. Also included are postal scales, typically with brass fittings – with many mounted on wood bases, and some on marble or onyx bases. These scales include sets of brass weights – usually in sets of 4 or more.
